We hope you’re all having a fantastic start to 2025! We’re already hard at work here at the Bisi Alimi Foundation, and we’re excited for all the amazing things this year has in store.
The start of a new year often inspires resolutions, ways to grow, learn, and make the world a better place. If you’re looking to make a meaningful impact this year, consider strengthening your allyship with the LGBTQ+ community. Being an ally isn’t just a label; it’s about taking consistent actions that promote equality and inclusion.
Ways to be a better Ally this year
As we navigate 2025, the world continues to change, but many LGBTQ+ individuals still face discrimination, marginalization, and social stigma. Your support as an ally can offer hope and solidarity in these tough times.
- Learn to Listen: Listening without judgment is the foundation of allyship. When someone trusts you enough to share their experiences, validate their feelings rather than rush to give advice. Last year, on our blog post, Chukwuemeka a gay man talked about how isolating it felt to navigate subtle (and not-so-subtle) biases at home and school, and how much they just needed someone to “listen”. Sometimes, allyship begins with a single phrase: “I’m here for you.”
- Everyday Actions Matter: Being an ally doesn’t always mean grand gestures. It’s the small, everyday actions that build trust and promote change. For example, think about the spaces you create: Do you respect people’s pronouns? Are you amplifying LGBTQ+ voices in your workplace or social circles? By normalizing inclusive practices, you can create a safer space for everyone.
- Educate Yourself: The key to being an informed ally is constant learning. Read books, listen to podcasts, follow LGBTQ+ activists online, and attend events like Pride marches or advocacy workshops. The more informed you are, the better ally you can be. This effort not only makes you more knowledgeable, but it also prevents emotional labor from falling entirely on the community you’re supporting. If you’re new to these topics, here’s a question to reflect on: What is one thing I’ve always wanted to understand about LGBTQ+ rights? Use the new year as an opportunity to seek answers.
- Be Ready to Speak Up: Allyship means standing against homophobia and transphobia in all forms. It often requires courage. When you hear discriminatory remarks, challenge them. If someone’s being excluded, be the first to invite them in. Your voice is very important in for dismantling prejudice. Yes, it can be uncomfortable but remember that silence can often feel like compliance and agreement with the hate. Speaking up doesn’t have to be confrontational; sometimes, it’s as simple as saying, “That comment isn’t okay.”
- Use Inclusive Language: Words matter. Practice using people’s chosen names and pronouns consistently. Avoid assumptions about someone’s gender identity or sexual orientation. If you make a mistake, apologize sincerely and commit to doing better.
- Support LGBTQ+ Businesses and Initiatives: A great way to uplift the community is by supporting LGBTQ+-owned businesses and donating to organizations that advocate for equality. By doing so, you can help us amplify queer voices and drive positive change, through programs and initiatives. Get involved with organizations working for LGBTQ+ rights. Volunteer your time, skills, or resources to support their work. Your contributions could help change lives.
Looking Ahead Together
Allyship is not a one-time effort; it’s a lifelong commitment. Think about the kind of ally you want to be, not just today, but consistently throughout the year. The world needs voices that lift others, and individuals who aren’t afraid to stand for what’s right. Be open to feedback, keep learning about new issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community, and adapt your actions to reflect your growth. What will your allyship look like this year?
